A pecan deriving from the hickory genus, is not truly a nut but is technically a drupe; a fruit with a single stone or pit and is surrounded by a husk. The seeds of the pecan are edible with a rich and buttery flavour.
Pecans are an excellent source of manganese and a good source of protein and unsaturated fats. They contain rich omega-6 fatty acids but contains half as much as that of walnuts. The antioxidants and plant sterol found in pecans reduce high cholesterol by reducing the ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol levels. Eating a handful of pecans daily may aid in the process of lowering the cholesterol levels similar to that of cholesterol-lowering medication.
