Sour Cherry (Prunus cerasus) also known as ‘Tart Cherry’ is a species of Prunus in the subgenus Cerasus (cherries), native to much of Europe and Southwest Asia.
Sour Cherries are useful in alleviating sleep problems due to its high melatonin content. It provides vitamin C, potassium, beta carotene and other nutrients such as fibre antioxidants, such as anthocyanins.
It alleviates discomfort associated with back, joint and muscle pain. Medical uses of tart or sour cherry are also related to diabetes and heart disease. Tart or sour cherries juice have been known to lower blood sugar levels in people who have prediabetes and diabetes. Consuming these cherries may also lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation and lower body fat that can lead to heart disease.
